VNDL: Describe your work/process.
KH: I don’t really have a process. I either have an idea then dive the fuck in or I just take photos that are right in front of me.
What have you been up to recently (trips, projects, work)?
I’m working on a pet portrait project at the moment that I’m really stoked about. Basically Glamour Shots with animals. That’s the only real project I’ve been working on that’s worth mentioning.
The other day I said “I don’t give a fuck about shit,” which I like a lot, but then again Victor Hugo’s has uttered some pretty profound words which I cherish as well. Let’s just go with all of Les Misérables or Lorelai Gilmore’s “Oy with the poodles already” for the top slot, mine will be my third favorite.
What are you currently listening to/reading/watching?
War and Peace and The Story of Philosophy by Will Durant which I’m really enjoying (that sounds highfalutin to the point where I’ll go ahead and tell myself to fuck myself before you have the chance to think it). Last night a friend literally texted me “You’re obsessed with Mariah” referring to Mariah Carey of course for that’s all she understands I listen to thanks to Spotify and she’s completely correct. I’ve also been all about Katy Hudson (Katy Perry’s Christian endeavor pre pop stardom) and Kung Fu Panda anything.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
You got me with that one.. Let’s just call it a happy place and say there.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I think about this quite often- Like most dudes I know, when I was imprisoned in puberty I couldn’t help but fall in love with EVERY girl I laid eyes on (#RealTalk) and in hindsight I ask myself: Was all womankind my dream girl or was I just the fucking randiest youth on planet earth?? At the time I could so easily articulate what I found perfect about every girl, but were these actual perfections to me or was 13 year old Kevin Hayes so hopped up on hormones he had no other option but to see the best/his favorite things in all these women? I think the answer is a lot of both and that’s also kind of the way I view being inspired at the moment. I think there’s perfection in pretty much everything save straight malevolence (ie: rape, murder, etc) and I’m at a point in my life where I want to like and be inspired by everything (ie: I’m horny) and the moment I started thinking that way it wasn’t too hard to start living that way. So what I’m trying to say it everything is a girl that gives me boners. On that same breath, there’s a goddess named Jessica Calvanico who’s pretty ubiquitous in my life. To me she’s mastered the art of pedagogy and has gifted me this gorgeous want to learn that’s fucking avaricious and she’s super cool. A real landmark in my life.. I can honestly go on about her forever, but I’ll spear you until I write my novel ‘Yo, I’m just trying to wear your skin as a suit: When a crush turns real’.
Kevin Hayes is a photographer splitting time between New York City and Los Angeles.
